We
are located in the beautiful Little Lake Valley in Willits, Mendocino
County, California. Willits has been dubbed "The Gateway to the Redwoods"
and is a popular vacation spot known for the Skunk Train. The lush pastures
of the Little Lake Valley and the surrounding hillsides are home to
a variety of livestock. One neighbor has a large herd of dairy goats
for commercial cheese production; another has a herd of miniature horses,
still another breeds and trains cutting horses.
Here at Merry Meadows Farm, sheep are a way of life. Our flock of 300
started some 20+ years ago with a few Finn-cross ewes. In the early
days, we tried to market lambs for meat, but our soft hearts would break
every time we saw our babies leaving the safety of the farm. Some claimed
we went soft in the head when we started keeping most of our babies,
and our focus changed to wool production. We introduced a retired champion
Targhee ram to our girls, and they hit it off just fine, producing many
triplets and twins. Sometimes, a cute little black lamb would pop out
and, we entered the world of natural colored wool. The Targhee cross
ewes were then bred to our Merino ram producing some outstanding fine-wooled
babies. These Merino-crosses were then bred to Cormo rams and their
offspring have produced some of the most outstanding white hand-spinning
fleeces we have seen. Our first Cormo ram consistently produced black
lambs when bred to our colored ewes. We now have an assortment of Cormo
crosses in lovely shades of silver and grey.
